It’s rare that an everyday mundane activity perfectly moulds with something as seemingly elite as ballet or modern dance.

London dance group C-12’s world exclusive performance Trolleys was just that.

Taking place only yards away from one of the city’s biggest supermarkets in Brighton Marina, there was plenty of inspiration for this modern ballet with a twist.

The premise of the outdoor performance was simple: five artists, each with a shopping trolley, perform a 15-minute choreographed routine.

Taking part largely on wheels, this was a performance that really did take the audience on a rollercoaster of emotions.

The simple storyline followed two people who meet and fall in love. Another has an argument with a stranger who then becomes a friend.

Set to a pulsating score, it was heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.

And for those who did not want to follow the story, there were enough backflips and trolley-swinging to keep the most inattentive of minds gripped.

This was art accessible for the masses, accessible to those people who just yards away were using the same four-wheeled cages to help them buy their food for the week.

Essentially simple, eternally thought-provoking, it was exactly the sort of performance to inspire those on all scales of the artistic spectrum to think “What if?” next time they go whizzing around a supermarket.
