The Argus: Brighton Festival Fringe launches today

When she was ten, Isy Suttie and her sister Cally released a balloon from their garden with a note attached to find a pen pal.

It landed two houses away - and began a life-long connection with Dave, then a 26-year-old accountant who lived with his mum.

Isy Suttie's former Edinburgh Fringe show was a true feelgood comedy, mixing songs and storytelling with beautifully witty observations.

Alongside Dave's burgeoning relationship with Pearl - a girl he met on a stag night and reconnected with almost ten years later on Facebook - Suttie told stories about her own experiences in love, mixed in with lists of interesting facts and cautionary tales about building boyfriends giant papier mache penguins.

As well as being an engaging storyteller, Suttie also possesses a brilliant voice, which she used to convey both Dave's blokey Matlock comments and ever-so-slightly posh Pearl's Guildford excited chatter.

Whereas Suttie's last self-titled show felt more of a collection of ideas, the structure behind Pearl And Dave made the experience much more satisfying, while still allowing Suttie scope to explore slightly surreal ideas.

As a performer she was a joy to watch, constantly smiling, full of energy and with an ear for an observations designed to make you smile with recognition.

A brilliant song in Welsh caused laughs - particularly from a group of Welsh speakers in the corner - while anyone who has ever decided driving wasn't for them during their early lessons would have found solace in her encore.
