I OFTEN follow letters around the country on the subject of transportation and feel I can make some suggestions in response to Nigel Davis (Letters, May 12) who appears to view driving his car as a “right”.

However, as Dani Ahrens says in a letter with an opposing point of view on the same page, there is a difference between “need” and “want”.

Department for Transport surveys have shown the vast majority of traffic (80%) is the private, domestic driver. They are usually alone in their car. They are also usually travelling fewer than five miles.

These surveys are filled in by motorists themselves. Only around 3% of them are classed as disabled drivers.

Perhaps Brighton, like other cities, needs to ask its motorists to fill in some surveys and establish the modal share, the distances and intentions involved?

I very much doubt traders, workmen, the disabled and those living outside the city will be in the majority.

Lastly, we need to be clear – from a legal perspective, driving is not a right. It is a licensed activity subject to agreed statutes.
