A father-of three told a court he grew his own cannabis to reduce the cost of his habit and because he was worried about the quality of the drugs he was buying from dealers.
Police found cannabis being grown under a tent in two rooms of the home of Charles Antoni in Henley Road, Brighton on November 18 last year.
Officers also found £5,000 worth of cannabis in freezer bags in his car.
The 51-year-old, who runs his own gardening firm, pleaded guilty to possession of the class B drug.
He was given a 12 month community order and ordered to do 60 hours of unpaid work.
