A man had to jump to safety from his first floor flat after a fire in his kitchen.
The resident leapt to safety through an opened window after a chip pan fire in Appledore Road, Brighton at just after 5.15am this morning.
Firefighters said that they believed the resident had fallen asleep while cooking and had lost his keys to open his front door.
The man was taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton suffering from smoke inhalation.
Three crews from Preston Circus and Hove attended the fire for around 40 minutes although the kitchen suffered only minor damage.
