In response to John Newman (Letters, May 9), yes mobility scooters are allowed on the road if under the right class.
There are three categories under DVLA rules. These are available to see on the Directgov website. Here's the link.
However there is another issue which can lead to mobility scooters using the road for longer than they intend, and that is the lack of suitable dropped kerbs along with access in the right and most convenient places.
Road works and cars parked on pavements also limit suitable access at times.
So, let’s not be too hard on them – they have a right to use the road and it says something of such off-road access lacking that they may need to.
