I WALKED past the fenced-off skip in Bartholomew Square, in Brighton, and, not realising it was “art”, my first thought was, “What an eyesore”.
I then read in The Argus (May 5) that it’s an art installation. My secondary thoughts are still, “What an eyesore”.
The skip itself is now filling up with rubbish.
Art is subjective, like most things, but if we need to be told something is “art”, then perhaps it is failing in its objective.
It may have become a talking point and, if that is what it set out to do, it has achieved it. But I’m afraid the phrase “the king’s new clothes” is the only one that comes to my mind.
Brighton is full of roadworks, building works and fenced-off areas – this is just another one.
