COULD someone from the Green Party of Brighton and Hove City Council please explain how reducing most of the speed limits in the city from 30 to 20 mph is going to reduce pollution?
If I wanted to travel one mile in the city when the speed limit is 30 mph, the journey would take me two minutes in ideal conditions.
If the speed limit is reduced to 20 mph, the journey would take three minutes.
This means my vehicle is operating for half as much time again, using a lower gear and therefore using more fuel and creating more pollution.
If you factor in that vehicles will be occupying that one-mile stretch of road for three minutes instead of two, this is likely to increase congestion, fuel consumption and pollution.
