The Music and Wine at St Luke’s classical concert series is seeking support as it makes its return to the Queen’s Park Road church this spring.

After a break over the winter months, Music and Wine at St Luke’s first event of the new series is scheduled for Friday 13th April. Concerts will continue to be held on two or three Friday evenings each month until the end of September.

Organisers are appealing to the local community for help with the various costs of running the events and are inviting people to become patrons of the series by paying upwards of £3 a month. They are also welcoming volunteers to get involved, either in front of house, serving refreshments or distributing flyers.

According to organisers, the concert series aims to offer residents of the surrounding Hanover and Queen’s Park areas the opportunity to view live classical music right on their doorsteps. It also looks to provide a platform for newly emerging local musicians, as well as those from further afield.

Visitors to this year’s programme of events can look forward to a percussion duo, brass group, baroque orchestra, bass flutist and a saxophone tribute to Coltrane, in addition to the more conventional soloists and ensembles.

Concert director Rachel Fryer said: “we aim for most concerts to include a mixture of light and more serious music, some well-known works and also some new music.”

Organisers also say that, for the first time, concert-goers will be invited to mingle and enjoy refreshments both before the concerts and during the intervals.

Rachel Fryer said: “One of the great things about this series is the informal atmosphere. Musicians talk to the audience during the concert, and often in the interval too, it has a friendly atmosphere.”
