The Environment etc. Cabinet Member Meeting on March 27 next week is likely to approve a parking scheme for consultation in Canning Street, one which is totally different to the informal scheme consulted on in January this year.
Although many of the 67 properties were in favour, based on the parking scheme sent to residents in January, the new scheme proposed for formal final consultation later in the year will be radically different.
Canning Street will become one-way westerly with staggered parking mainly on the south side, whereas the documents sent to residents made no mention of any one-way system and the staggered parking would be mainly north-side.
Cars will only be able to access Canning Street via Walpole/ College Terraces, exiting into Sutherland Road.
These changes are not mentioned in the main report on March 27 nor was there any mention in the full results analysis in Appendix D. The map in Appendix B shows the change but only if compared with the January map.
A council officer said today: “Following discussions with the Road safety team, and the comments from residents of Canning Street to the informal consultation, it has been proposed to change this arrangement. The overall parking scheme proposal is recommended in the report to be advertised through a traffic order to allow formal comments from members of the public in April / May.”
