Although the railway came to Hove in 1840, the current station was not opened until 1865.
The original Hove Station was off Holland Road and later became a goods depot. The new one was called Cliftonville, later renamed West Brighton and eventually Hove in 1895.
The main building is very similar in design to that of Portslade but another building was added later containing the ticket office and making the station look different.
Hove used to be busy when Brighton and Hove Albion played at the Goldstone ground nearby and still caters for crowds who watch Sussex play home cricket matches.
