Calls for road improvements followed three city centre crashes.

Three people were knocked down on the roads of Brighton at the weekend.

The most serious crash took place in Lewes Road, shortly before 8pm on Friday.

A man suffered a badly broken leg when he was knocked down by a van near the junction with Hanover Crescent.

He was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital for treatment.

A 13-year-old was knocked down by a car at 2.50pm on Saturday near the Thistle Brighton Hotel in King’s Road.

The teenager was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital with an ankle injury.

At 3.35pm a pedestrian was knocked down by a car at the nearby junction of East Street and King’s Road, but was not injured.

In 2009, the latest year for which figures are available, 194 pedestrians, including 87 children, were hurt in road crashes in Brighton and Hove.

Lewes Road is set to receive a £6 million transport makeover to tackle congestion.

Brighton and Hove City Council’s ruling Green party has also said 20mph zones could be introduced as soon as next year in areas including the city centre.

Green councillor Jason Kitcat, who represents the seafront as part of Brighton and Hove City Council’s Regency ward, said improving safety for pedestrians is a priority.

He said as well as the idea of 20mph, more crossing points may be needed.

He said: “I will be meeting officers very soon to discuss the East Street area and pedestrian issues.

“Pedestrians naturally want to go to and from the sea into the centre of town but King’s Road is essentially a dual carriageway.

“It is a real challenge.”
