Floral tributes are shown in great number at Brighton war memorial in Old Steine in this postcard. I would guess the picture was taken soon after the memorial was unveiled by Earl Beatty in 1922. Designed by Sir John Simpson, it was supposed to resemble a Roman water garden and contained more than 2,000 names of Brighton people who died in the Great War.

The water became mucky in the 1980s but Brighton Council solved the problem by installing a small pump in it.

This memorial is still the scene in Brighton of the annual remembrance services for the fallen in both world wars and other conflicts.
