Another new club – well, Jam in Middle Street reborn – opens its doors tonight.

To celebrate, Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar, a “destination cocktail bar/art happening/club and cabaret venue”, hosts Restlesslist, Stars Down To Earth and Paper Playground, plus DJs Halfbeat, Dynamic Sal and C-Dogg, at its free launch party.

Sally Oakenfold told Dominic Smith why we should give the place a chance before the big party, which kicks off at 7pm...

Why did you decide to take over Jam?

Somebody had to love Jam and we will do that.

What attracted you to the venue?

It was a promising little cave in dire need of some TLC. A diamond in the rough if you will, and I can never resist one of those.

What’s the best thing about it?

It has two floors, it’s right in the centre of historic Brighthelmstone... as Kirsty and Phil would say, “Location, location, location”.

There are hundreds of clubs and bars in that part of town – why will you be different?

We know Brighton, we know the tunes that people want to dance to and we have all the party-starters in the gates, hungry to catch the rabbit.

There are two of you running the place. How will the division of labour work?

I’m going to do 100% and Iain is going to do 100 % – what does that equal? It’s not like The Apprentice – it will take effort but we’re prepared.

What experience do you both have of the bar/club industry?

We’ve drunk in a lot of them. Occasionally, we even played music and invited our friends to come. Notable nights include Dynamite Boogaloo, Kick Out The Jams, We Love Pop, Hold Up, Life Is Easy, Shameless, Pop Musik, Glitter And Twisted... and a few that have been lost in the sands of time, probably for the better.

What other gainful employment have you done?

We’ve gainfully given many people a night out to remember, or not, depending on their drinking capacity.

What sort of vibe do you want to create at Sticky Mike’s?

Fun and frivolity for those who like to be shaken, not stirred.

Will you be changing the decor?

Yes, dramatically. Let’s just say the charity shops of Brighton and Hove will be empty for a few weeks. Lots of creative people are clamouring to leave their mark on the place and there’ll be so much neon light that you should probably bring some factor 15.

What about the bar – are you changing the products on offer?

Real ales, proper cider, organic wines and spectacular cocktails will be the order of the day – and the evening. Homemade pizzas are on hand to soak up the booze but please remember, eat responsibly.

Can you give me some prices?

Prices will be affordable with student offers and happy hours to satisfy the light-of-pocket. Drinkers of all socio-economic standard will be catered for, without compromising quality; how does £1.75 for a vodka and coke on a school night sound?

What sort of crowd are you targeting?

Irresponsible mums, deadbeat dads, party-seekers, joyous revellers, flamboyant gays, poker-straight norms, muso misfits and misdemeanours. It’s an inclusive door policy.

Who would play your ideal night?

Jarvis Cocker hosting the pop quiz, John Peel on the decks, a so-cutting-edge-you-haven’t-even-heard-of-them-yet band playing downstairs and Slash mixing the cocktails. That’s not going to happen but we’ll do our utmost.

Tell me about the name...

It’s the name of a club I used to go to when I was living in New York in the early 1990s. I thought I’d invented it but Google confirmed it was a golden memory gleaned from the subconscious of my youth.

In a year’s time, what are you hoping to have achieved?

A club where new promoters, bands and DJs can find their feet and put on parties that make people leave (reluctantly) with a smile on their face and a yearning, burning desire to return, as well as the great and good of Brighton’s party circuit being allowed to do what they do best – put on a party that rocks.

Where’s the best live music venue you’ve been to?

In its heyday, I saw some of my favourite shows at the Freebutt, and we are honoured to have the former manager helping us turn Sticky Mike’s into the best Frog Bar in the whole of Brighton.
