Many people in Kemp Town do not know there was a railway to it from Brighton which lasted until the 1970s.
This picture was taken in 1964 of the signal box at Kemp Town Junction. It was taken by Derek Osborne of Hove, who was signalman there between 1960 and 1965. The little line proved uneconomic for passengers in 1932 but continued to be used for freight. The final train ran in 1971.
Its terminus is now an industrial estate and the tunnel is used for storage. Part of the line was converted into William Clarke Park by Brighton Council. The viaduct over Lewes Road has been demolished.
