Sainsbury's has been refused an alcohol licence for its controversial new store.
Objections from residents, police and councillors saw the supermarket's application for a licence at the former Taj store in St James's Street, Brighton, turned down.
Brighton and Hove City Council's licensing committee decided the retailer's plans could have had an impact on alcohol fuelled disorder in the city.
It is unclear whether Sainsbury's will appeal the refusal, as it has done at its nearby North Street store.
There have been suggestions the supermarket would withdraw from the site if it was not able to sell alcohol but Sainsbury's has always claimed it is committed to the location.
