The King Alfred site is to be considered for a Sussex ice rink.
Initial talks have been held with planning officers from Brighton and Hove City Council about creating a temporary structure at the leisure centre in Hove.
Brighton resident Simon James has been gathering interest from locals, politicians and business about backing the scheme which he believes would regenerate the surrounding area.
A full structural survey would be required as the planned rink would sit on the grassed area above the old ten pin bowling area.
Mr James believes the start up costs would be about £800,000 and it would be run by a not-for-profit social enterprise firm.
A formal response is due back from the council on Thursday and, if positive, a planning application could be submitted in the autumn.
