A section of road in central Brighton is reported to have collapsed.
North Street has been closed eastbound and council officers have been sent to investigate the scale and cause of the problem.
Officers said the collapse may have been caused by a water main bursting because of the cold weather and thaw.
Sussex Police were called at 2.22pm today.
No traffic is being allowed downhill on North Street and buses are being diverted along Queen's Road, North Road and the seafront.
