The first air raid in Brighton during the Second World War did not take place until July 1940, ten months after the conflict started.
This picture in a book produced by the Brighton and Hove Gazette about the war shows damage to houses in Whitehawk Road.
But the raids continued for almost four years after that.
There were 56 in Brighton and 198 people were killed, with almost 800 injured.
More than 5,000 houses were damaged and 200 of those were completely demolished.
In Hove, 29 people died and about 500 people were injured. Another 5,000 homes were damaged, 80 of them completely wrecked.
