This fine old picture shows the Brighton fish market which occupied a site on the front between the two piers.
Fish was sold from a nearby site for hundreds of years but the market was created when the King's Road arches were built in the 1880s.
The market provided a popular place both to buy fish and to watch the catch being brought in from the sea.
Brighton Council closed the market down for hygienic reasons in 1960 and moved it to Circus Street.
But when the arches were renovated in the Nineties, a fishing quarter was provided including an interesting museum.
For many years the Fish Market Hard, along with The Level, were the two sites in Brighton used for open-air political meetings and public speaking.
