There used to be many windmills on hills in Brighton and one of them was on land near what is now Ladysmith Road.
David Rowland of Telscombe Cliffs, who sent in this picture, says it was called the Bear Mill or the White Bear Post Mill. It was in existence by 1813, when it was shown on a map, and had many owners over the years. The site was excellent and in 1854 it was advertised as being "the best winded mill in Sussex".
Work was hard for millers during windy periods and they would sometimes go up to 20 hours a day without a rest.
The spread of housing in Edwardian times a century ago led to the end of this mill and the last mention of it was in 1903.
