A nine-year-old will celebrate his birthday today in a garden partly created by volunteers from The Argus.
Kennedy Wells has cerebral palsy and needed somewhere to stretch his muscles and improve his mobility. For five years he and his mother Shelagh lived in a fourth-floor flat where that was impossible.
They were finally moved to a house with a garden in Norwich Drive, Bevendean, Brighton, but the garden was so overgrown it was dangerous for Kennedy to play outside.
Last month a team from The Argus Cares cleared out bushes and concrete to make the garden ready for landscape gardeners RW Green to carry out landscaping and fencing. The project was part-funded by The Argus Appeal. RW Green, from Lewes, donated shrubs and containers.
Kennedy is unable to play in the street because he has poor balance and is unable to move quickly enough away from possible hazards. In May Shelagh was told that unless her son built up the muscles in his legs, he could be in a wheelchair within a year.
He now has a soft grass surface to play on together with his other birthday present, a puppy named Snowy.
The Argus Cares is part of the Brighton and Hove City Cares initiative run by the Brighton and Hove Business Community Partnership.
