The Environment Agency and Sussex Sea Fisheries officers are working to combat the increase in illegal fishing along the Sussex coast.

Illegal 'fixed engine' fishing, which involves anchoring a net to the sea bed, has been on the rise in the last few weeks.

During August, several people were caught fishing illegally in Sussex. Nets were removed from two illegal fixed engines in Hastings, the offender reported to the SSFDC legal department and the fish were seized.

A 100-metre net was also set illegally in Hastings and nets were removed from an illegal fixed engine in Eastbourne. Two offenders were reported to SSFDC legal department and the fish were seized.

Two men were also reported for illegally netting fish off Rock–a-Nore Road, Hastings.

Fishing laws forbid the use of fixed engines to catch sea trout and salmon and the Sussex Sea Fisheries District Committee set out the by-laws which govern how nets are set, subject to location, time of year and mesh size.

Suspected fishing offences should be reported to the Environment Agency on 0800 807060.
