A popular green approach to Hove should be included in the South Downs national park, countryside campaigners told a public inquiry.
Benfield Valley and Hangleton Bottom, at the junction of the Hangleton link road and the A27, should both be preserved in the new park, it was claimed.
They should be included as a gateway to the Downs, the national park public inquiry was told.
Benfield Valley campaigners said the area was of archaeological and wildlife interest, easily accessible and footpaths and other public open spaces in the area were well used.
Carole Robinson, of the Benfield Wildlife and Conservation Group, said: "We feel Benfield Valley extends to Hangleton Lane and meets the criteria required."
Both sites could lose area of outstanding natural beauty protection if they are not included.
The Countryside Agency, which has drawn up the national park proposal, said neither area was unspoilt countryside.
The inquiry is due to continue until September. The Environment Secretary is not expected to make a final decision until 2005.
