A decision on Brighton and Hove Albion's Falmer stadium bid could be imminent.

Sharmila Meadows, the case worker in John Prescott's office dealing with the application, has written once again to all parties involved in the plans.

Earlier this month it was reported Mr Prescott could announce a decision on Albion's bid for a 23,000-seat stadium during August.

However, Ms Meadows has given a hint a verdict could arrive before then by informing parties Mr Prescott "wishes to proceed to decision".

The Albion's plans for a new home on the edge of the South Downs were the subject of a detailed planning inquiry last year.

Planning inspector John Collyer heard all the submissions before Christmas.

However, the inquiry was reopened in February to those who had given evidence after another planning inspector said the site was unsuitable.

These comments were circulated among the interested parties by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.

They drew a further 25 letters of response from 20 different organisations and individuals.

These included Brighton and Hove City Council, supporters' group Falmer For All and the club's planning consultants DMH, all of whom are backing the stadium bid.

Other respondents included Lewes District Council, the Campaign to Protect Rural England and Falmer Parish Council.

All these letters have now been forwarded and Ms Meadows said any final remarks would need to be made by Wednesday.

She said: "All representations already made, both for and against the proposals, will be taken into account by the First Secretary of State, so far as they are relevant, in making his decision.

"The Secretary of State wishes to proceed to decision and does not intend the exchange of representations should continue indefinitely.

"For that reason, final comments are invited."
