The Argus campaign for justice for Guantanamo Bay detainee Omar Deghayes has been commended at an awards ceremony.
The campaign, demanding the fair trial or release of Mr Deghayes, a 37-year-old man from Saltdean who has been held at the prison camp for four years, won praise last night at the Amnesty International Media Awards.
The Justice for Omar campaign was shortlisted in the Nations and Regions category, open to print or broadcast media in English regions, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.
Judges said: "It was a brave and unusual move for a local paper to take up the case of a Muslim terror suspect.
"Sometimes it is not the way you tell a story but the fact you tell it at all. This story brings international human rights abuses and the disastrous nature of the 'war on terror' to the doorsteps of Brighton residents."
