With less than a week to the opening ceremony, I've visited five popular pubs to get an insight into their World Cup preparations and speaking with regulars. It seems that excitement is going into overload and in general people have already made plans to watch as many matches as possible.
Vintners Parrot, Warwick Street, Worthing
Home of the local World Cup novelty video 'We are Engerland' landlady Andria Smith explains: "We are really geared up for the World cup, having a large bar area, VIP room and Function room. In our VIP room we will be offering table service and high definition screens."
As for that slightly difficult mid week 3pm knockout against Slovenia, Andria suggests: "Make prior arrangements at work to leave early, come in here well before knockout and join the party." Bar staff Megan and Kelly are hoping for Peter Crouch to produce some more robotic goal celebrations adding a bit of humour to the match.
If England make it to the final Andria predicts: "The atmosphere in the country will be electric and there will be a impromptu street parties breaking out everywhere."
The writer would defiantly endorse the Vintners Parrot for all your World Cup needs. I am positive there will be some brilliant evenings to look forward to over the coming weeks.
The Palmeira, Cromwell Rd, near the County Ground
Landlord Tony Humbles is looking forward to the World Cup. He explained: "This pub is more about food than football. However, we will be catering for fans. It is a huge event and we know that a lot of our regulars will be very keen on watching. During the games we will be serving high quality snacks."
The pub is kicking off in grand style on Thursday, June 10 at about 7.30pm at their pre World Cup party. Football Anthems will be played and clips of previous England matches will be shown on the TVs. In keeping with the food aspect South African cuisine will be offered. All are welcome to attend.
In a balanced view not every one is catching World Cup fever. Palmeira regular Gary Burnett is nonplussed about the world cup and is not interested in football. Gary works for himself so could easily watch that 3pm mid week knockout but somehow I believe he will be working whilst the majority of us will be glued to the TV.
If England reach the final he said: "It will be like the recent general election, there will be no escape!"
The Palmeira should produce a slightly more civilised environment than some other places.
The Exchange, Goldstone Street Hove
Kiwi Neal Ainsworth, manager of the Exchange, is focused on World Cup preparations. He explained: "This is a traditional football pub creating an exciting atmosphere during the big England games. We are catering for customers by putting on a BBQ out front selling home-made hot dogs and burgers where we hope that people will like the convenience."
In addition there will be a fun promotion where Fosters will be priced at a reduced rate of £2.50 until the first goal is scored.
During the big matches Neal advises: "If you are planning on visiting us please come early as this place will be packed to the rafters and we would hate to have to turn you away."
Neal is hoping for an English victory however he will be watching all of the New Zealand games with interest.
Exchange regular James Hannon is looking forward to the World Cup, "with excitement and a little in trepidation. following England is like being on a roller coaster. Even today we have heard about Captain Rio injuring himself which is bad news."
James has already lined up his afternoon for June 22. He said: "I will be finishing work at lunch time and then making my way here building up to the big match."
If England do make the final, he said, "the county will go potty and there will flags everywhere with people holding parties and BBQs.
"I desperately want England to win 2010 but failing that the Dutch have a great chance and I will be having a few quid on Van Persie picking up the Golden boot."
The Exchange will be typically packed with footy fans creating an exciting atmosphere.
Smugglers, Ship Street, Brighton
Supervisor Giles Bone said: "We have nine screens, a large bar area and have plenty to offer football fans." As the pub is so close to the beach, there will be a "relaxed holiday atmosphere mixed with international customers. During the games we will be offering bar snacks, and our free computer games and pool tables will be up and running for any non football fans."
Smugglers occasionals Simon Friend and Paul Hazell are really up for the cup. Simon explained "The World Cup only comes around every four years and I am really looking forward to the big knockout." As to the 3pm Wednesday kick off both have made arrangements to watch the match at home. Paul says: "People should be up front about wanting to watch this match and get prior authority to leave work early rather than throw a sickie."
Liverpool fan Simon is chuffed that Gerrard has been given the captain's armband saying: 'I think he will do a brilliant job as skipper."
If England make their way to the final, Simon believes "there will be mass hysteria and the country will come to a stand still while everyone is united in celebration."
If the Lions were to falter both believe that Spain have a chance of victory.
The Smugglers will offer a relaxed environment to watch the big matches and with its huge floor space it will be relativity comfortable. There will also other things to do for the non football fan.
The Florist, Upper North Street
The Florist is offering two screens and a projector during the World Cup. It will offer a completely different atmosphere in tranquil and chilled out surroundings. Florist occasionals Clare and Jonathon were enjoying a quite beer when I caught up with them. Clare said: "The World Cup isn't my main focal point on the horizon but seeing all those flags on cars is grabbing my attention." Jonathon works in London and has already arranged to be in the pub for the Wednesday match, adding: "I defiantly want to see this game."
If England get to the final Clare predicts there will be: "a definite frenzy and lots of lager will be consumed on the day."
Both feel that with David Beckham on the management team England have a fair chance of victory.
The Florist will offer a chilled out ambiance for football fans. Watching World Cup matches here should prove to be a relaxing comfortable and enjoyable experience.
In conclusion, watching the World Cup down the pub is certainly going the be popular and it seems if England make that final on July 11, every pub is going to be rammed.
