People living in the Brunswick area are hoping that the removal of the taxi rank at the bottom of Brunswick Place will open up more car parking spaces for residents.
Most of the taxis park currently do not use the rank, especially at night, but park opposite the pub and along by the Border Store and 3-4 off licences. This is supposedly so people don't have to walk far from the pubs to get a taxi, but seems more to do with how many cabs can get on that stretch than into the actual taxi rank.
This does cause other issues such as noise, road blockages and the like, but residents feel that if the taxi companies do not use it, then it should be transferred back to normal parking spaces.
From a recent FOI request, there are licensed 1103 vehicles for the year 2009 /10 and 1765 driver licences were issued.
The council received 181 complaints which resulted in 1 driver having his license suspended and 1 driver having his licence revoked.
