Around 70 families with children at St Mark’s CofE School attended a Family Information Day organised by Hannah Barker, the Community & Schools Development Worker, Extended Schools - East Area, Whitehawk Cluster.
Ms. Barker said: “The aim of the family information day is to give local families the opportunity to discover what services are available to support and help them and to allow the parents to meet the people providing the services.”
Among the services and organisations taking part were the Family Information Service, Brighton & Hove Libraries, the Emergency Services, and the Scouts. Advice on offer ranged from eating healthier, how to get support for families with children with special needs, dealing with drug abuse and joining the local library.
Ms Barker said that each organisation featured a short activity/quiz question for children and families and stickers for them to collect. The idea was to promote an interactive atmosphere. Some organisations had stickers with their organisation name on, some had shiny colourful stickers, some used rubber stamp or a little paper cut out.
“It was a fun way to get across the serious messages of how families can get help,” said Ms Barker.
