The evening started at 4pm for Mummy McCann. An early start but much had to be done before our date. I felt nervous and wanted to make every effort to look nice for Gav.
I ran a bath and had bathtime with Isobel. Isobel chose the day as the first time to vomit whilst in the bath with me so I ended up having a shower with her in her bath seat. It was the first time she had seen the shower on and she seemed amazed by it.
Getting ready whilst entertaining baby was a hard task but by 5:30pm our little one was asleep in her cot. A few false starts with sleeping and a dream feed later we managed to leave our home at 7:25pm. It felt really strange to not only leave the house without baby but also without a massive change bag full of essentials and toys.
Gav and I ate at the Caroline of Brunswick. This was the second time I have eaten there and the food is good and also cheap. I love the music they play and Gav was chuffed that Sonic Youth were being played as we headed to the bar. After a discussion that it maybe it would have been nice as a child friendly pub we decided that some places are nice as adults only. It meant we have certain special places just for us.
At 8:30pm we headed to the Duke of Yorks for a 9pm doors open. My bladder still at its pregnancy best didn't bode well but the lovely staff at the Dukes let me come in early to use the loo.
Unreserved seating meant getting in the queue early was a must for us. I wanted to be as close as possible to the stage and we managed to get seats in the centre of the second row.
I should explain that this first date was extra special for us. I walked into our wedding to the Wedding Song by Angus and Julia. It is a very beautiful song written for their friends. We heard the song first at a gig they did at the Hanbury Ballroom a few years ago and were mesmerised by its stunning lyrics. After our wedding a friend of ours sent us a package and in it was a signed cd with personalised wrapping paper (a drawing of a couple) from the brother/sister duo.
Angus and Julia didn't disappoint with their personal lyrics, pleasing melodies and calming harmonies. The dancing of Julia Stone never ceases to make me smile and wish that I could feel as carefree as her dancing looks.
The Dukes of Yorks was a perfect venue for our first date. I've seen Angus and Julia twice before (the second time at St Georges Hall) but this venue has yet to fail me whether it be seeing a gig like this one or with Kristin Hersh, Eamon Hamilton or seeing a film (my most recent being attending the Baby Scream Screen - that's another blog altogether). The staff are always pleasant and seem to enjoy where they work. There is a passion in the venue as well as it being a place that seems magical enough to brighten up the London Road.
My husband Gav is still great company, I enjoyed having him all to myself again and look forward to future dates. It is like revisiting the beginning of our relationship again, we are new people yet familiar and it was lovely to concentrate on us.
To end the night we arrived home to a wide awake four month old with a temperature due to teething. Her auntie had made the attempts to encourage her back to sleep. Both parents calm and happy from having spent the evening with just each other for company, were ready to face the possibilities of another sleepless night.
