Brighton Bears have confirmed they will not be competing in the British League in the coming season.
But they insist they will work with the BBL and could return in 2007-08.
A club statement released last night read: "Following negotiation with the BBL the Bears management felt that in the interests of the long term viability of the franchise the best option was to take a break from competition so that all focus could be directed towards off-court matters. The decision has been made following a tricky 2005-06 campaign both on and off the court.
Bears coach Nick Nurse explained" "I appreciate this isn't great news for Bears fans. However we set ourselves high standards and our playing strength last season was not at a level we feel suitable for the organisations or our fans aspirations.
"It was a very difficult decision to make but there are issues off court which will take some time to address and we do not feel it is in the clubs best interests to compete on the court during that time.
"Sometimes you need to take a step back to move forward. In the ensuing months our Bears junior teams will continue to prepare and will compete this season.
"We will also continue to run our community programmes and basketball camps, including this summer's Bears camp at the Brighton Centre August 28-September 1.
"We look forward to working with the BBL over the next 12 months and returning to BBL competition in 2007/08".
