Former Eastbourne Eagle Andrew Moore has urged Sussex speedway fans to turn out for racing with a difference and not just because he is making his Arlington comeback.

Moore, who was a disillusioned figure when he quit Eagles in May, is now enjoying his racing again as part of the Silkolene Short Track UK series.

The sport, otherwise known as American dirt track racing, arrives at Arlington for the first time on Sunday (2pm), though it could become an annual event if the crowds turn out in force.

These days, Moore combines work as an engineer with weekends as an amateur works racer for CCM and is closing in on his first win of the championship.

He will be up against tough opposition at Eastbourne from the usual suspects, including Italian star Marco Belli, as well as Eagles speedway stars Lewis Bridger and Edward Kennett, making their debut in this event.

Moore said: "I had a go at this sort of racing and enjoyed it so much I decided to keep going.

"Basically it's 12 laps of 12 riders going wheel to wheel. People will enjoy it even if they do not know many of the riders there.

"From my point of view it is great being the works rider.

"The team get everything ready for me and I just turn up, put on my leathers and ride."

The 12 starters are lined up in a grid and there is plenty of overtaking though without the sliding at corners you would associate with speedway.

Moore tends to go well in the qualifying heats but has suffered bad luck in the finals.

His three meetings so far have seen him break down when second, fall in wet conditions when leading and, latterly at Mildenhall, come second.

Arlington experience is unlikely to help him on Sunday.

He said: "That makes no difference. It is such a different sport.

"The last event was at Mildenhall, where I used to ride speedway, but I hardly noticed it was Mildenhall when I was racing.

"Lewis and Edward could do it. Speedway riders tend to fit in better than anybody else."

Bridger is relishing the challenge. He said: "It's a completely different sport to speedway but we will go for it.

"I could win it but then I could finish absolutely nowhere."
