"Everybody has a teacher they remember from school" (The Argus, July 24). I read this with a surge of memories and great affection.

Yes, Michael Hickman was my form tutor at Dorothy Stringer School in 1979 and he filled my heart with terror but my head with knowledge and understanding.

He knows what being a "teacher'" means and I hope he appreciates the affect he has had on his pupils.

I, for example, am standing for election to Brighton and Hove City Council next year.

Through his retirement, may Mr Hickman enjoy relaxing days full of his beloved Tolkien.
