Four years after heroin almost wrecked her life, 32-year-old video store manager Tracy Heart (Cate Blanchett) is completely clean but still wrestling with the demons of her past.
Her poor credit history prevents her from ever borrowing money and her mother (Noni Hazlehurst) watches over her with an eagle eye, fearful she may one day slip back into bad habits.
The trouble begins when Tracy's dealer ex-boyfriend Jonny (Dustin Nguyen) returns to Sydney to work as a stockbroker in one of the city's banks. Against her better judgment, and the warnings of her mother and brother Ray (Martin Henderson), Tracy gravitates towards Jonny.
Meanwhile, she agrees to help former Australian football star Lionel Dawson (Hugo Weaving), the gay ex-partner of drugs kingpin Brad Thompson (Sam Neill), to go cold turkey.
However, he is weak and when he pleads with Tracy to get him some heroin, she agrees, leaving her in possession of the drug that consumed her all those years ago.
