We all know our councillors do a difficult job very well and they have a difficult task ahead of them deciding on the Brighton Marina development plan. But I do hope they will be remembered for doing well on this one and help us drag Brighton into the future.
Future generations will thank them for it and remember them all for being strong and refusing to be bullied by a minority of local residents who don't want change.
Other councils, to quote one councilor, would bite this developer's hand off if they were offered this deal. And, let's be honest, it does look stunning.
In a few years, trade and business in Brighton could be booming and local businesses which are struggling now could see a rise in their employment and turnover.
Please, don't lose this chance to encourage business growth and for people to feel better about themselves because they are working and not on benefits.
We have at our fingertips an amazing opportunity for Brighton as a city.
Those who don't want to see us prosper and grow are a minority of people who are "happy and content with their lot" and don't want change.
Here are some examples of what we would be missing: 341 affordable homes for the city's essential workers; a new doctors' surgery; 105 permanent new jobs plus hundreds of construction jobs; indoor and outdoor children's play areas; large areas of open space for leisure and games; a new RNLI station and yacht club; educational features incorporated into a unique public viewing gallery; new cycle and pedestrian routes between the marina and the rest of Brighton and Hove; a well-lit and secure footpath and cycle lane along Madeira Drive, further integrating the marina, the Peter Pan play area and the city centre; and, finally, £6.25 million will be invested to provide sustainable transport links for the development.
All this would look fantastic but some councillors want to say, "No, thanks".
Please don't let this brilliant opportunity (not just for us but for generations to come) pass us by.
