Permit parking and short-stay spaces could be introduced in part of Sussex in a bid to stem congestion.
Controlled parking zones could be set up in Burgess Hill, taking away free spaces and replacing them with the permits for residents and short stay zones for shoppers.
Letters are being sent to 5,000 homes and businesses in the area detailing the proposals and asking people what they think.
If the response gathered by West Sussex County Council and Mid Sussex District Council is favourable it is likely they will press ahead with the plans later this year.
Both councils say the reason they want the zones is to reduce congestion and remove badly parked vehicles obstructing emergency services and driveways. No final decision has been made.
