Wayne Jackman is in error regarding the joint planning application by Cardinal Newman School and Brighton and Hove Hockey Club to build multi-sport pitches and a pavilion on private land behind the school (Letters, July 18).
There will be no "demand for local parking".
All parking for this facility will be within the school in existing spaces, using existing access points.
The fenced off area is 27 per cent of the site not "almost two thirds".
The facility will be used by a wide cross-section of the community, including a number of local schools and other sports clubs, including disabled clubs and adult education groups, not "club members only".
Mr Jackman is correct to say we have a business plan.
We need it to ensure sufficient money is put away to maintain and replace the pitch carpets, which cost more than £100,000 each.
Furthermore, Sport England would not have given their support to our application if we had not put forward such a plan.
However, his implication we need the pavilion to be a seven-days-a-week, income-generating bar is groundless.
Our club has survived for more than 100 years opening the pavilion just one day per week.
We are a non-profit organisation and any surplus is re-invested, particularly for junior development.
The floodlighting has been expertly designed to minimise any overspill.
A very small number of residents on Old Shoreham Road will have their light levels increased by up to five lux - less than half of a single street light until 9.30pm, at the latest. For this we apologise.
The impact on Avondale Road, where Mr Jackman lives, is nil.
To say there would be "noise pollution from the attendant crowds" is laughable.
Hockey is one of the last bastions of amateur sport, even at the highest level.
East Grinstead is one of the premier clubs in England and their support rarely tops double figures.
Hockey is not about number of supporters.
It is about participation of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.
Indeed, it is the second largest participation sport worldwide.
What a shame a small number of people don't want it to have a home where it can thrive in our city of Brighton and Hove.
