In response to Pete Gillman's questions about why taxis and minicabs don't stop when he hails them (Letters, July 17), first of all, minicabs (private hire vehicles, not taxis) won't stop when hailed in the street because they are not licenced to.
Taxis have two-way radios and may be heading for a pick-up already, or a particular taxi might not be licenced to stop in the street in that particular area.
The roof light is connected to the meter, which means it only goes out when the taxi is occupied regardless of where it is.
Finally, the fares taxis charge are set by councils, not drivers.
