In response to Mavis Aldridge and J Hales (Letters, July 7), the hockey pavilion and pitches would benefit the whole community, both east and west of London Road.
The fencing is to protect residents and motorists.
Public transport adequately serves the Old Shoreham Road, Dyke Road and the Upper Drive, in particular the excellent park-and-ride scheme from Withdean Sports Complex.
Compared to the increased traffic created by the BHASVIC car boot sale, for example, I believe additional traffic from a few hockey players would be insignificant.
It is also commonplace for hockey players to car-share.
I understand Cardinal Newman School is working in conjunction with Brighton and Hove Hockey Club and no doubt working for its pupil's best interests.
As J Hales rightly says, it is wonderful children can play cricket in their local grassy space but there are many places where children can play cricket and barely any where children can play hockey.
Most existing pitches are primarily for the use of the schools which own them.
Any resident of Brighton and Hove would be proud if they could see the spirit of the youngsters when they play hockey.
