A group in name only, Simply Red has evolved into a revolving door of musicians fronted by Mick Hucknall.
It now comprises 11 musicians and, like or loath the old lothario, Hucknall's latest collective appears set to be a succesful one.
Despite looking podgy and red-faced, he remains an enigmatic pop star.
The band opened with bossa-nova style Lady from forthcoming album Amplified. There were also a couple of covers, The Small Faces' Debris and Bob Dylan's Positively 4th Street.
Next single Oh What A Girl was received well but it was reworkings of hits such as Fairground and Something Got Me Started which got people dancing.
Hucknall was in good spirits, the winks and butt wiggles of a confirmed ladies' man still there.
The lush surroundings of Petworth ensured this was a classy affair. However, big screens would have been appreciated, especially for the later arrivals at the back.
