Complaints about cyclists failing to use cycle lanes along the seafront frequently crop up in the Letters Pages and, recently, a number of councillors have joined the chorus about cyclists not riding where they are supposed to.
However, we are assured the police and others will move in to fine the miscreants breaking the law.
But perhaps we should reflect that the reason so many cyclists don't keep to the lanes provided is they are largely filled with pedestrians, many of whom pay no attention to clear signs both on the tarmac and on posts.
Instead of just hammering the cyclists, there ought to be a simultaneous drive to encourage people on foot to keep their part of the bargain and stay off the cycle paths.
Believe it or not, such co-operation is entirely possible, as is shown in countries such as Denmark and Holland.
By the way, I am a pedestrian, not a cyclist.
