This "daringly different, wildly diverse and utterly unpretentious" Sixties night is back after an 18-month break, with a new home and regular slot.
The brainchild of Da Doo Ron Ron founder and DJ Chris King and Brighton Northern Soul all-dayer supremo Simon Bridger, this brilliantly-named night ran monthly at the Sussex Arts Club for just over two years, before finally ending its monthly residency in December 2004.
There followed a clutch of extra-special one-offs during 2005 but it never had a place to call its own - until now.
It launches tonight and will take place on the second Friday of every month thereafter.
Residents Chris and Simon, along with Jim Smith, will serve up a musical smorgasbord to include plenty of the usual suspects, such as The Small Faces, The Kinks, The Four Tops and Dusty Springfield, plus lesser played gems from the likes of The Mamas And Papas, Simon And Garfunkel, Velvet Underground, The Byrds, Lovin' Spoonful, Manfred Mann, Desmond Dekker, The Hollies and The Animals.
Chris says: "Shake has no truck with the Mr Magoo mentality that sees most Sixties club nights sticking rigidly to one specific genre, - be it soul, beat or whatever.
"We will mash up pop, soul, beat, psych, Motown, garage, ska, surf and anything else that takes our fancy, just as long as it's danceable and ace."
"Shake is also vehemently against the obscure-for-the-sake-of-it brigade. We will gladly play The Beatles, The Monkees, The Beach Boys, The Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Pet Clark and countless other justly celebrated Sixties icons, alongside lesser known artists and tunes."
