Sussex all-rounder Robin Martin-Jenkins insists the Championship battle is not a two-horse race.

The county have a better record at halfway than they did when they won their first title in 2003.

But they still trail leaders Lancashire by six points, although a good result against Kent at Hove this week would lift them back to the top of the first division with Lancashire not in action.

Martin-Jenkins said: "We have won six out of eight so far but are still not top which shows just how competitive it is.

"We've still got to play Lancashire at Hove where we have a good record but there are four good teams this season whereas when we won it the race was only really between us and Lancashire.

"Hampshire will be very competitive with Shane Warne back and Warwickshire could be a threat as well.

"They don't have many stars but they are dangerous opponents. And we still have to go to Edgbaston where we haven't won since 1982."

Martin-Jenkins also has high regard for Kent even though they have not beaten Sussex at Hove for 14 years.

"They are a strange side," added Martin-Jenkins.

"When they perform they are difficult to play against. Their squad is similar to ours in that they have quite a few guys who have been around for a while so they gel well together."
