Last Friday evening, I walked down Madeira Drive from Dukes Mound to the Palace Pier and witnessed no less than eight incidents of young boys and girls driving cars at very high speed around the chicanes (which were put there to prevent speeding) and overtaking each in a competitive and highly dangerous manner.
It was only 7pm and there were many people attempting to cross the road with children, prams and dogs.
At times, they may as well have been endeavouring to cross the M1.
When I reached the Palace Pier, I walked back along Marine Parade and saw two drivers being flashed by the speed camera adjacent to the end of Burlington Street for what seemed to be a minor infringement of the 30mph speed limit.
If we are to believe, as we are told, that speed cameras are to promote safe driving rather than raise excessive revenue, why are there no cameras on Madeira Drive?
