So Brighton and Hove City Council and Sussex Police are to become more proactive in patrolling the seafront cycle areas, with the promise of more fines for those deemed to be in breach of the law (The Argus, July 1).
As a regular cyclist, I see no problem with this approach - I know I am sometimes guilty of taking the odd shortcut across cycle-free areas and even during quiet times this does present an obvious danger to the unsuspecting pedestrian.
However, while the council is busy putting up more signs reminding cyclists to stay in the lanes, it might want to consider erecting an equal number of warnings for pedestrians to stay clear of the cycle paths.
I speak as someone who has recently had a bike ruined by colliding with a group of pedestrians who wandered into my path blissfully unaware they were heading into the cycle lane.
Come on, Brighton and Hove City Council - you're keen for us to stop clogging up the roads with our cars so give us cyclists a break.
And while we're at it, can we please have a cycle lane on the wide pavement of Madeira Drive, from Kemp Town to the Palace Pier?
