Christians opposing the theatre production Jerry Springer The Opera stood outside the Brighton Dome in protest last night.
Handing out leaflets asking 'What's all the fuss about?', 30 to 40 campaigners from churches across Sussex attempted to explain why Christians see the play as blasphemous and offensive.
Stephen Green, national director of Christian Voice, has been travelling across the country to each theatre showing the play and co-ordinating the campaign.
He said: "There will be people down here every night until the show finishes on Saturday. I wrote to the Dome management when I heard they would be putting the show on and I think they received a lot of other letters but they went ahead anyway."
He claimed that every theatre which has shown the play so far has made a loss of ticket sales.
But co-writer and composer of the show, Richard Thomas, said: "We have high hopes for Brighton. If Brighton doesn't want us then we're all doomed. He added: "It's nowhere near blasphemous.
"It's about freedom of speech."
