I was at the very first London-to-Brighton ride, greeting the cyclists at the top of Ditchling Beacon.

It was organised by a West Country bike shop - I believe it was called Bath Cycles - and it took place on a Saturday.

Now it is organised by the British Heart Foundation and there are far more riders, people complain about the congestion it causes.

In London, New York, Tokyo and many more cities, thousands of competitors run marathons, no doubt creating massive congestion and blockage, but we never hear complaints about congestion in these cities. The delays must be as bad, so what is different about our city?

The London-to-Brighton bike run was established before most of these marathons but one thing we do not have is television coverage.

So how about Brighton and Hove City Council getting on to the BBC or ITV to give our city and this fantastic event appropriate coverage?

This could also raise even more money for this deserving cause.

Perhaps that would put a stop to some of the complaints.

As for the train problem, they should be able to come up with a solution between them satisfactory to all parties, and if it could be shown in the TV coverage, this might prove the incentive they need. To cut down on the need for transport back to London, many participants should be able to ride back.

A reasonably fit cyclist can manage 100 miles in a day easily.

A friend of mine rides up from here overnight, then rides back for the event, and he is not a young man.
