A casino which has been empty for five years could be demolished and replaced with a "no-frills" hotel.

Plans to redevelop the Queen's Road site in Brighton have been submitted to Brighton and Hove City Council by French hotel group Accor.

If granted, the casino, formerly known as Sergeant Yorke's, would be torn down and a 147-bedroom Ibis hotel built.

The hotel group, which markets itself as offering "excellent value" in a "convenient location", would rise eight storeys above street level and include a 46-seat restaurant.

It would have 94 standard rooms, 45 family rooms and eight disabled-access rooms. Four car parking spaces and 16 bike spaces are also included in the plans.

The 1908 former casino was originally built as a garage and was part of a group of buildings used by the railway station.

It later became an antique furniture salesroom and restoration workshop and was opened as a gambling venue in October 1971.

It closed when Grosvenor opened a new casino above the former ABC cinema in East Street, Brighton, in 2001.

Plans for a restaurant and bar were approved by the city council in March 2004 but never came to fruition.
