While I do not disagree that Elton John performing at Sussex cricket ground is a good thing for Brighton and Hove, the question remains as to whether or not the venue is suitable for this kind of event, located as it is in the middle of a heavily residential area.
Thankfully, I like Elton's music, as the volume of the concert was such that doing anything apart from listen would be impossible.
The question has to be asked, though: Would this concert have been allowed to go ahead if it was by a group who did not appeal to an overwhelmingly middle-class, middle-aged audience?
For example, would not an equivalent disturbance created by Fat Boy Slim, The Kooks or Girls Aloud have resulted in a tidal wave of angry letters to this page?
I would also ask: Why was there a continuously circling police helicopter above the venue? Were the police worried about Elton's fans rioting?
