John L Hyde Smith, on the feasibility Brighton and Hove having a cathedral (Letters, June 21), is correct to say the city is in the diocese of the Bishop of Chichester. Also, before they became a single city, Brighton and Hove had Lewes as their county town.

However, some of the older cathedrals of Great Britain were originally large parish churches such as Lancaster, Portsmouth and Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.

This makes is quite possible with its position and architecture to develop St Peter's Church into a cathedral and establish a diocese of Brighton and Hove city with a new bishop.

However, who says it has to be a Church of England cathedral? Why not a Roman Catholic cathedral such as Norwich City.

Or, if neither of the main religions wish to provide this city by the sea with a cathedral, why not invite as a first some of the new religions to fill the gap?

As the proverb says: "Where there's a will, there's a way."
